Years after its last episode aired on The CW, "diaries of a vampireremains one of the most popular shows on the network, thanks in large part to Netflix, which made all of itseight seasonsreadily available to new and returning audiences. With a user rating of 9.4 onIMDb, the episode seems to have stuck the landing. As a powerful witch and one of the series' most beloved characters, Bonnie has always been the one to save the day, often at great cost to herself, and fans might have been outraged if she died in the end. While a sizable segment of the show's fanbase always wanted a Bonnie and Damon pairing, in the end, she ended up without a partner. However, she was arguably still the strongest character with the most integrity on the show.

Katherine Pierce (also played by Nina Dobrev) was the seductive vampire who sentenced the Salvatore brothers to eternal life and pitted them against each other over the centuries, reappearing when the two fell in love with their modern doppelganger, Elena. Manipulative, deceitful, and self-centered, she enjoyed watching Stefan and Damon fight over her, often pretending to favor one over the other. In the episode leading up to the finale, the brothers learn that Katherine has taken over Hell. When she has her henchmen crash Stefan and Caroline's wedding, it becomes clear that she still has plans to get back at the brothers. After Bonnie's near-death experience, Katherine pretends to be Elena, just awakened from her magical coma, only to be laughed at when Damon almost falls for the pretense of her. If you had told viewers in season one that Stefan and Caroline (Candace King) were going to end up together, most fans of the show would have scoffed, but that's exactly what almost happened. The couple made it down the aisle, barely, and managed to exchange vows and enjoy a few hours of bliss before all hell broke loose, literally. It quickly becomes apparent that Stefan, who had returned to human, and Caroline, who was still a vampire, had their work cut out to save their loved ones once Katherine revealed herself.
The explosion after the wedding seems to portend an ominous future for the couple, whose simple friendship has blossomed into love in recent seasons. When Stefan learns that his older brother, Damon, plans to sacrifice himself in an act of redemption to save Mystic Falls, Stefan steps in and sacrifices himself.the sameinstead of.
